Being self taught, I actually don't go back to the basics enough...mostly since I am stubborn and like to try (and even fail) many times until I get something...thought this would be a good exercise in values. Size 8.5x11.5 on Fabriano paper.

  1. Holly, I agree that it is hard to go back to the basics. That's why I started doing the Scavenger Hunts on WetCanvas. Usually I do a sketch of what I'm going to paint right on the wc paper, with no value study. All the sketching practice for the hunts is improving my drawing a lot. It also forces me to do some sketching every day. I like the idea of monochromatic paintings, like little value studies.

  2. thank you Joan. It's a tool I know I don't use often enough. I'd actually love to do a 'black and white' series of trees...hhmmm..not a bad idea!
